| The Single Payment Scheme (SPS) replaced most of the previous crop and livestock payments from 1st january 2005. There is no longer a link between production and support. |

| Instead, to receive payments, the farmer is asked to demonstrate that they are keeping their land in Good Agricultural and Environmental Condition (GAEC) and complying with a number of specified legal requirements relating to the environment, public health, animal health and welfare, and livestock identification and tracing (SMR's) |

| Meeting these requirements is described in the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) legisltation as "Cross Compliance". |
| |
Many of the requirements reinforce existing legal requirements, and for these you are not required to do anything new. |
